When relationship problems arise, take the step to talk things through.

Relationship breakdowns are always tough, no matter if it's for the better or, the worse. You will feel many ups and downs and may question your actions as to why things happened the way they did. You may have times where you blame yourself, and you may feel scared, confused and anxious.Your world's turned a full 360 degrees, and the sudden change can be overwhelming.Breakdowns not only affect your well-being but your social life, your real-life issues, parenting and family problems (if you have children), and financial security as well.

A breakup often happens due to conflicts and constant anger between both parties. Early warning signs include recurring arguments, lesser sexual engagement, and feeling of dissatisfaction and unfulfillment. These behaviours may trigger worse-case scenarios in the relationship, such as a sense of loneliness and misery or physical and mental abuse.

Ultimately, it takes two to tango. When it's only you trying to work the relationship out, the relationship cannot last for long. Breakups are indeed painful, but there are many ways in which you can act upon these negative feelings and thoughts, grieve through them properly, heal at your own pace, and move forward once more.

Common Causes of Relationship Breakdowns

How do you tell when your relationship may be in jeopardy? Here are some clear signs you may potentially experience the end of your relationship and how you can try to prevent it:

  1. Your partner may be cheating on you - Sadly a common problem in many relationships but is one of the most painful to experience. Cheating isn't just limited to physical contact. There are many other forms of cheating , such as emotional manipulation, cyber-cheating and "chexting".
  2. You're not spending enough time with your partner - In this scenario, external factors could be considered, such as work schedules and long distances. However, if you realise that you don't necessarily miss your partner's presence, that can be a significant problem: you don't enjoy each other's company anymore.
  3. Money issues - Even the most well-established couples have trouble when it comes to money matters. Is any one of you spending too much on a hobby? Are you impulsively buying items that aren’t needed? Do you feel pressured because your job versus his or her job pays less? Is your partner using your savings without your knowledge? These problems become worse as they build up.
  4. Relationship with your Children - You and your partner may have a clash of parenting styles, or you’re having a hard time dealing with your children’s temperament. Discovering the problem is complex and may vary depending on the family’s cultural and social influences.
  5. V ices, such as Gambling and Drinking - Gambling can immensely affect you and your family’s financial and emotional well-being. Property loss, economic instability, massive loans, and endless debt are known issues for gamblers and can lead to breaking relationships with their significant other and relationships with families and friends. It is the same with alcohol - its psychological effects greatly influence how couples interact in the relationship and can lead to worse problems in the future.

Talk Things Through

When relationship problems arise, it’s essential to take a step further and talk things through. Transparency is the key; when a proper discussion between you both isn’t enough, a therapist’s perspective and interaction may assist you both to confront the issues and inspire you to be more honest and open to one another. Relationship breakdowns are traumatic to experience and difficult to accept, but don’t forget to prioritise what’s important to both of you.
